4 out of 5 stars A review for Gundam beginners   October 19, 2008

If you're a Gundam fan, then you don't need a review to guide you. You probably already know what you do and don't want and what to expect out of a Gundam. This is a write-up for people who might be on the fence about the franchise or those who live the look of the models but maybe aren't familiar with the show like me.

The first thing you should know is that this is a model, not an action figure. Deathscythe Hell comes on several plastic runners that you must break the individual pieces out of before you can assemble them. The runners are labeled with letters (A, B, C, etc.) and the pieces with numbers. The included instructions are in Japanese, but the detailed pictures tell you exactly what you need to know, kind of like a LEGO set. Snap together construction means you don't have to worry about glue either.

Unlike a LEGO set however, your finished product isn't made to come back apart and only has one configuration. However, building a Gundam is a fun (and slightly time consuming) experience. As a first timer, I spent a solid 2 and a half hours on Deathscythe Hell. The figure at the end of it all is quite rewarding, as well.

The finished product is fully articulated and can hold a variety of poses. Even without paint (which is something some may want to consider even though the kit comes with some detail stickers) the Gundam is very detailed. Deathscythe Hell exudes quite a presence, even though it only stands about 16 cm high. The wings make this thing look downright intimidating. Even the closed-winged "shield" or "cloak" mode gives off an air of mystery, and the beam scythe (with removable blade so it can turn "off") is a unique and cool accessory.

Fully articulated as it is, it's not really set up to be "played with." It'll hold a pose just fine, but it's light and may feel frail to some. It is hollow, after all. Some of the pegs may seem loose, as well as some of the joints. People who like to doodle around with their stuff may want to consider some glue to fix these problems.

All in all though, Deathscythe Hell Custom is a really neat toy. It's fun to build and fun to pose. Beginners may want to try something else first to get their feet wet, but diving into this one head first proved to be a great experience! I definitely recommend it to those who like a hint of "darkness" with their serving of giant robot. Also, pair it with a version of Gundam Wing Zero Custom for a cool devil/angel motif. The two have a really cool synergy when displayed with one another.

The best part about this gundam its its wings, it just looks so cool. However, its a bit flimsy and light (it is a nongrade after all), but it will hold. Also, its not absolutely necessary to paint this kit. But i do highly recommend to just panel line it a bit, it'll make all the difference. Once put together, this kit will shine.
And yes, the angel/devil thing with Wing Zero Custom does look very cool.
